Structural steel detailing

Shop drawings come first. Ours are computer-generated and go straight to the machines that cut and drill your steel.

How we do it

Drawings that run the shop.

Detailing turns the engineer's design into shop drawings: every piece mark, cut length, hole, cope and weld the fabricators need. A mistake on paper turns into a fix in the field, so the drawings have to be right.

GIW started working with computerized detailing in the 1970s and became a full-time participant in the Sun Systems detailing program in 1978. Back then we key-punched the data in our drafting room, processed it on a mainframe in Texas, plotted the drawings in Philadelphia and mailed them back to Aurora. That early work prepared us for SDS-2 when it came on the market, and we keep investing in computerized detailing systems today.

You see the payoff on the floor. Our CNC machines take their data directly from the computer-generated shop drawings at the operator's console, so the saws, drill line and plate processor cut from the same numbers the detailer drew.

What you get

  • Shop drawings for structural and miscellaneous steel
  • Drawing lists with revision tracking from our FabSuite system
  • Detailing tied directly to fabrication and erection under one contract
Why it matters

One set of numbers,
start to finish.

  • 01

    Same data, shop to field

The detailer, the CNC machines and the erection team all work from the same drawings.

  • 02

    Revisions stay in-house

When a revision comes in, the company that drew it also cuts it, so the change reaches the floor without a hand-off.

  • 03

    Reports you can use

Our FabSuite reports, from drawing lists to shipping tickets, are available to share with your project team.

Questions

Common questions

Straight answers to what GCs and engineers ask us about structural steel detailing.

Does GIW do its own steel detailing?

Yes. Structural steel detailing is part of our Division 5 scope. We have used computerized detailing since the late 1970s, starting with the Sun Systems program and later SDS-2.

How do your shop drawings connect to fabrication?

Our CNC machines take their data directly from the computer-generated shop drawings at the operator's console. The saws, drill line and plate processor cut from the same information the detailer created.

Can we see reports on our project?

Yes. We run FabSuite steel management software for estimates, purchasing, inventory, production control and project management, and we can share its reports with you if they help you manage the job. See sample reports.
